Default group riding

when you ride in a group how staggard are you, how close

i don't ride in large groups. largest group was 6 people. like 2 or 3 better.

with more people it just seems it could get kinda weird. almost like doing a funeral thing which can kinda do that slinky thing. like speed up, slam on the brakes, speed up again.

so sometimes with even just 2 or 3 we could be blocks apart, other times closer. but usually we are farther apart.

what do you guys do.

just curious.

I ride 2-3 seconds behind the bike that is in front of me to the left or right which will put me 4-6 seconds from the bike that is in front and in my track. Most of the people that we ride with use this rule. We have a few that tend to crowd the next bike in front of them. I try to avoid being in front of these guys and gals.

I've done some rides with a fairly large number of bikes with my local HOG group. I find it to be fairly tedious. I love the sound of all the bikes and the camraderie (sp?) but, as you said, it's a lot of speeding up and slowing down trying to keep the right distance. I also feel sometimes it's a little more dangerous when the whole group has a lane change. I wouldn't stop doing it but sometimes I like the freedom of riding by myself.

We ride most week ends in group rides. Each group of riders ride a little different. And you must watch out for all the new riders as they have a hard time riding in any group. Most of the time they back and forth in a couple lanes and slowing down then speeding up.

I rarely ride with more then 6 other riders, and for the most part, the ones I do ride with have thousands of miles together. So it "usually" works itself out, especially with varying road conditions. The idea behind staggered riding, is to allow some room for maneuvering within a group.
That said - what are you comfortable with if you need some wiggle room?
Side by side riding on the other hand, is a totally different animal!

Depends on who I'm riding with and how big the group is. With just buds that i have rode with for years, we tend to stay in a pretty tight pack. With complete strangers or in a large group, I tend to give a lot more space. Got to leave room for the always present idiot who feels the need to pass 40 bikes at a time trying to get to the front of the pack. They always seem to need a place to fall in line when the meet a cage cresting a hill where they had no business passing in the first place.

I generaly ride with 15 or more in a staggered formation. I find that the riders in front of you are constantly looking for and pointing out things that are in the road that might be a hazzard. Yes, there is speeding up and slowing down depending on the road conditions but that keeps me alert.

The only group I'll ride with is a bunch of seasoned outlaws (not the MC) I've known for years....Even then we've had people killed! Ride hard & fast but it sure is fun!

The only groups I ride with are all the bikes in the Black Hills in Aug.

The rest of the year I only ride along with my wife...
