Default internal wiring handlebars

i want to step up the bars on my 09 streetbob. I got 17" apes that are dimpled but not setup for internal wiring....Is it taboo to customize them in order to have internal wiring??? I'm thinking using a drill bit, drilling 2 holes on the bottom and opening the gap with a dremal and cutoff blade....probably step bit by the grips.....ohh there one inch bars becuz of the damn tripletree

I read where some have done it but I don't recall if they had 1" or 1.25" bars. Try a search either here on in google, bet you'll find something on it.

I did this with a set of stock FLSTN bars on my '94. I did exactly what you are suggesting. I used a 3/8 center drill to drill out the dimples and drill two holes in the center section. I slotted the center holes and finished them with a grinding burr and a Dremel tool. I ended up enlarging the holes to about 7/16 for a good fit for my wiring harness. I wouldn't recommend going any larger for 1" handlebars. If you do this, spend a lot of time dressing the hole edges. You want no sharp edges to cut through a wire. The stock handlebars are stainless steel, so I didn't have to worry about plating or rust, but the stainless steel was hella tough to drill and grind.

Did it weaken the bars? Probably, but I've had no trouble in 5 years and 50,000 miles.
