Default Sturgis help....

If anyone would like to help us out that would be great. My wife and I have never been to Sturgis and are thinking of going this year. We know it's late as far as motels but are thinking of camping. Anyone who's been and would like to suggest a campground that's not too wild (but not too tame either...lol) and is safe please give us some advice. Is there an area where some of the brothers and sisters on here meet up when at Sturgis. That would be great also. We would like for our first time to have someone to go with but none of our riding friends can get away.

Motels still avaliable. I was just looking at adding a few days. Not real cheap but saw a few in Rapid City for $200 a night...

If you want quiet camping, just stay at one of the KOA's over by one of the parks that aren't so close to Sturgis. You may miss out on some of the "stuff" that is all part of the Sturgis experience like the Buffalo Chip etc... But you can still experience some of it at your pace by going to those shows. If you just want to daytime it around Sturgis and have quiet evenings, it is easily done.

My wife and I made the trip last year from Va. and pretty much rode the whole trip by ourselves. Long story, but in the end it was great Q time for me and the wife. We met some interesting people along the way, some where cool and some made us a little nervous. But we made it there and back safe. Stayed at my uncle's place near Rapid City, hot tub and all (thanks!) cause we lost our hotel (again long story). We rode a LOT around Sturgis area. Didn't really participate in to much nitelife, but had fun regardless. The only thing that sucked was the hail storm(s) and thunderstorms. Be safe and most of all have FUN!!! You'll love it.

Edit: I was just looking through my pics and videos from Sturgis last year... and want to add: Make sure you are prepared for everything for temps ranging from 50-100!!! Most of our pictures we are wearing leather. Also, good rain gear is a must.

+1 for Hog Heaven stayed there a couple of times. If you're looking for a hotel Spearfish is a good place but not if you're running up ape hangers. Anything over shoulder height is a $20 fine on the spot and you don't leave until you pay the cop. The only draw back about Rapid City is it's about 40 miles from Sturgis

You'll probably get a lot of different answers on here, but here's mine.

I've been to the rally many, many times and for the past 10 years or so we stayed at the Bulldog Campground. I'm not going this year, but my friends are and are staying there again.

It's about 3 miles east on I-90 on the left, heading towards Rapid City. There a few campgrounds out there, another is called Rush No More.

I'm my humble opinion, and I've stayed at many, any of those campgrounds off of I-90 just east of town are the best for semi-lowkey camping. You can get in and out of town easily (which is important as you will see)and they're low key (although they do have the occasional small band and beer tents).

When you make reservations, just be sure to tell them you need shade! Camp near trees, for sure. It's hot in SD in August.

Have fun! Wish I was going.

Check out Days End or No Name City. Both are class acts.
