Need comments on best digital camera that is simple to use and will not cause me to take out a mortgage to pay for it. My Olympus digital is not cost effective to repair and will need to replace it. Don't want something complicated to use, good point and shoot. Small so can carry in pocket. Want to be able to download here.
I'm a big Canon fan but I'm currently using the 40D SLR which is definitely not a pocket-size point and shoot. You may know most of this anyway but, since there are hundreds of cameras on the market these days, I'll just make a couple of comments on what you might want to look for.
*Viewfinders don't exist on most small cameras anymore. You have to use the built in display to compose your shots and those can be hard to see on sunny days. I personally wouldn't own a camera without a viewfinder.
*More mega-pixels are not necessarily better. When you put that many pixels on a little sensor the noise level usually increases. Some of my best images came from a Canon 20D which had "only" 8.2 megapixels.
*Ignore the specs for digital zoom. Optical zoom is what matters. If you select a camera with a zoom of 10x or greater you should also try to get Image Stabilization to compensate for camera shake and blurred images.
*Try to avoid proprietary batteries. It's nice to be able to just grab a couple of AA batteries in case your battery suddenly dies in the middle of nowhere.
Like I said, I'm a big Canon fan but all of the big name brands make very good cameras. Go to your local electronics or camera shop and see what looks good and feels good for you.
I have a SD550 Canon and love it. It is older in camera years. The new ones have stabilization, can shoot movies, hell a Canon (not this one) even shot parts of the new Iron Man movie.
Only spend around $200 because in a few years these little cameras will be shooting full length HD movies. All cameras break when dropped so $200 is a good price.
I have a Sony DCR-VX2100 that is a great camera but it is very big in comparison. It is what I am shooting my fork maintance movie (how to) with but you have to bring along a lot of stuff with you.
I also have a Canon Rebel. Great camera but you will spend a whole lot more in lens's than for the camera body. I have no less than 10 lens's. It takes a long time to set it up and you should become friends with a large family of illegals who are willing to work cheap carrying equipment.
I shot most of my web site with the rebel but many "on the run" shots were taken with my SD550. The last shot is one I took with my small camera. I use the smallest one the most.

Point and shoot pocket type, I have a Canon Sure Shot S230and a Samsung Digimax A6 and both are pretty damn good for that type of camera. I am a died in the wool Canon junkie too after years of having nothing but Nikon's for a long time, I switched over to Canon DSLR's for my serious stuff 30d's, 40d's and the white lenses, look at any sporting event and see how many white lenses you see, yep they are all Canon's.
i have two canon cameras. my old one is a 7 megapixel and my new one is a twelve. i like both cameras really well. my daughter took some great pics riding 2 up with me and you would have thought i was sitting still.

Engraved Rebellion: Inside Bundnerbike's Glam Rock II
Couple of weeks ago I needed a new camera. I wanted cheap, good pictures, simple, use AA batteries and SD card. I found a Nikon Cool Pix L22 at Sams that met all this. It is simple, I like that. It was $112. 12 megapixles, 3. 6 optical zoom, 3 inch lcd screen and Image Stab. Also some other stuff like "Smart Portrait" that I probably don't need.
