Come on folks - it is not always possible to look farther ahead and avoid stuff in the road. We've all ridden in heavy traffic, and $hit in the road appears too quickly to safely react. Can't swerve sometimes due to the heavy traffic. I've run over stuff as big as a wooden pallet. It is a good idea to stay alert and all, but regardless of how careful you are, you WILL find yourself in a situation occasionally where you're gonna run something over. When that happens, keep the bike as upright as possible, try to hit the object square (not at an angle), and hope for the best.
