Exclamation Need Help

My husband, 21 year old daughter and I just finished a motorcycle driving class...taking the state licensing test on Monday....hope we pass! Went looking at new HD's today (Road King, Softail Heritage)....anybody have any idea how much we can negotiate on pricing???? can't find any invoice pricing information and for the potential of buying 3 bikes I would think we would have a fair amount of leverage in this economy....but we are newbees!!!!! Thanks.

Not to throw cold water but have you considered a used lighter bike to get some seat time? You could share it for experience then proceed

Don't know any pricing info. Dealer will prob say that each one has its own stand alone value but stick to your guns. Just tell them " I may be purchasing one at a time, but I am buying all three at once ". If they don't want to talk, just get up and leave.

Highly recommended to do your homework first. How many dealerships nearby ? Get the sales manager and the dealership managers' name. Pay attention. Be aware of slight of hand. Good luck.

+1 on lighter bike for first bike . . .if you want a big twin a Dyna is not terrible in the weight department.

Around here it seems like they still don't negotiate at all . .they will give you the assembly and other BS costs but the bike still ends up pretty much damn near MSRP.

Go online to harleys website. You can look up the bikes and find out what MSRP is. Negotiate from there.

Tell us where you live and you'll get advice on which dealers will be more likely to bargain for you.

Around San Diego I always recommend San Diego Harley in Kearny Mesa. Even before the economy went down they were giving very good deals on bikes.

Smile Need Help Response

Thanks for all the useful information. we have thought of a lighter, used bike but we have had not so great experiences with used cars so are gun shy about used with motorcycles when safety is such an issue.....also we plan on keeping these bikes for many years so are not in the mindset of buying and then 2 years later upgrading. we would like to get something that suits us (appropriate but not extremely advanced) and learn to ride it slowly. We are looking for casual riding - out to the country and maybe some long distance casual trips several hours in total. we live in the NW suburbs of chicago. Appreciate all the helpful responses. Again, thanks to you all.

3 new riders on 3 heavy large new bikes all starting to ride together. Let me know where you ride so I can be sure to stay away. Be careful. Look for a discount on 2010's. Maybe 1500 off or so. MSRP on the 2011's when they arrive.

Default Location?

Knowing where you are located will help in getting some good information regarding best dealers in your area. Dealers get kickbacks for just selling a bike and some make little off the top. Other dealers like to get as much as they possibly can, not wanting to negotiate much. Also, I hear that dealers are also open to offering upgrades, apparel, and maintenance with new bike purchases.

I suggest calling around to the various dealerships in your area.

Edit: I didn't see that you posted your location.

If you are serious about buying 3 new Harleys and dropping $50 K or so... I think any dealer would be glad to work out a deal with you. Get MSRP from HD web site. Pick out the bikes you want and offer the dealer 3K under MSRP (total all 3) out the door. If they dont want the business, go to another dealer down the road. There are lots of dealers in NW Chicago area.
