Interesting to mention the battery. Just replaced mine on the 11 FLTRU.. One day it worked, next dead as a door nail. Brought it to the shop,, ZERO cold cranking amps and only 5.5 volts... dead cell in the battery. It gave no warning at all. Picked up a new one for a nice HD price..
I ride as much as I can so my battery stays charged up pretty good. My battery lasted a little over 8 years. I think that I could have gone longer but I wore out my motor last year and decided to go to a bigger motor. My battery was a little sluggish with the new motor so I replaced my battery, problem solved.
Almost 8 years and its done for now, last summer it seemed to struggle to start but was able to get through to fall. I hope the replacement will last almost as long.
I just buy the cheapest batteries I can find. My last Adventure Power battery lasted 7 years before it started getting weak. Just picked up a new battery at Walmart for $75.00. I have never used a tender and my bike always starts right up in the spring.

Battery life is relative to ambient temp, charging system reliability, length of riding...listening to your radio while you clean it duh...your battery needs a good 30 minute ride at 2k-3k rpm to charge, a tender if fine but I don't recommend it solely, just starting once in a while does nothing but drain it...I recommend twisting that little star nut under the throttle and let it run at 2500 rpm for 20-30 minutes...if you can't get it out on the road...
I have a dead cell in my battery, have for 3 years but I have a good charging system and I ride a highway at least 30 minutes twice a week, with the carb problem I was having turning it over after a jet change long enough to refill the float bowl and test rides drained it more than once... but regular highway time charges it right back up...
