Check you voltage at the battery and check your alternator. If you have a repair manual from HD specific to your bike it tells you exactly how to trouble shoot your charging system in detail. It gives ac voltage and dc voltage at a certain rpm range and where to check it with a multimeter. I am not sure why you would be looking for a short ---what you should be looking at is the charging system, battery condition, and clean tight terminals first. Short circuits fix their selves---they either blow fuses, trip relays, burn wires till they open, or burn your bike up.

Start with the simple stuff, make sure your battery cables and grounds are clean and tight. Have the battery load tested. If all of this checks out get out your manuel (if you don't have one your local library might) and test the stator out put. Last thing to check is the voltage regulator.

Yes, mine did the same thing when my stator and voltage regulator took a dump.

thanks I have checked for shorts, checked all grounds and the battery has been load tested. I had replaced the voltage regulator and also the start relay. The charging system checks out unless I am reading the voltage for the stator wrong. If I recall correct the book said there should be between 12-18 VAC from the stator for every thousand RPM's. It also says that the rotor RPM is 57% of the engine RPM. Does that mean They are using the engine RPM or the Rotor RPM.
