I want to powder coat my front forks, primary cover, handlebars, and the chrome top piece of the front suspension forks, the part that the risers go into...
My question is.. Do you think it is possible to dismount, have powder coated, and mount back on the bike myself? Or is it more for someone who is harley mechanically inclined to do? How hard/easy is this to do? 2010 fatboy lo...
Well, I did all of that (including the actual powdercoating) so yes it is quite possible. Like Terry says, you will never be able to do it unless you try. The service manual and some common sense go quite a long ways.
A manual is a good idea, you'll use it for a lot of other things also. There are also some very good mechanical threads on the site that'll make removing the fork lowers a lot simpler. Do a search and you'll see how easy it can be.
To the OP...that depends. Do you break out in cold sweats at the thought of wrenching? If not, than you might be able to handle the project at hand. It's not difficult. I'm no mechanic and swapped out my stock cams for an aftermarket set which included top end disassembly. I hadn't one clue what I was doing but I took my time and made sure I reassembled it properly using the service manual as a guide.
Ok... cool, thanks.. I was told after powder coating the parts.. You have to obviously put them back on, and was told to buy some tools with a nylon coating so I dont scratch or scuff the new powder coating... Anyone know where I can get some descent tools like that? I cant seem to find any... btw, the dealer wants to charge me 14 hours labor to do all that, and a side shop wants 10 hours labor..

Instead of buying special tools just get some blue painters tape and mask things off before you put a wrench on them. Might need to adjust the size of wrench you use but it should do the job. Might want to talk with the powder coater you're going to use and ask them what they recommend also.
I left it to the pros, the bike was spankin new only 300 some miles. I took it to a custom shop here in town , he was the same guy that worked on my 01 Indian and contracted out the PC work. Trusted him, wifes got along, dogs friendly all that, great shop. I had and idea and he made it happen. I met the powercoater after, 1st class as well. Did it all at once.
