Default is it redundant

to have coil spring suspension and a spring mounted seat. i'm rebuilding the the road king i wrecked last summer. there will be extensive fab done to the rear. the bags will be eliminated and the fender struts will be chopped off too. air shocks will be replaced with coils. it will look more like a dyna than a road king when it's done.

the basic recipe is apes, fish mouth pipes, solo seat, tombstone tail light. it's fairly common but i love the look and will try to make it as original as i can. i love the look of spring mounted solo seats on hard tails and i know people do it on bikes with suspension as well. i know i can "do whatever i want because it's my bike" but........will you point and laugh and say "look at that dumbass with coil springs and a spring seat" to your buddy when you see my bike?

i'm leaning toward a nice, custom made, solid mounted, tooled leather seat but i like the look of the springs.

Doesn't the cross bones have them both? Yes, yes it is redundant.

My Crossbones came with the standard Softail suspension set-up: internal spring rear suspension mounted below the frame (out of sight).

The combination you are suggesting (external spring shocks and spring mounted seat) was stock for many years on the 74. It was an option up until the seat post was reduced in size. You should be able to find pics of Duoglides without saddlebags to get an idea of the look.

I don't think you can have to much suspension on a Harley. Including the seat. Since I changed to a Corbin seat, I can feel a lot more bumps.

If you're asking for opinions: I think it looks silly and redundant: at least with a soft-tail the "real" suspension is hidden, so it looks moderately function-based to the untrained eye.

On the other hand, if you actually find it more comfortable, go for it. I don't care for it as a look though.

there were police road kings with spring seats but the bags hid the shocks. i want it for the look and not the functionality obviously but it's not hard to cross over into cheesyland going after a look. i don't like the look of spring seats on softails because of the way the seat is kind of cradled in the frame. mine will sit on top more flat.

+1 The new Sportster 48 is a good example where a spring seat would help keep your Chiropractor at bay.

I'm sure there's a few diehards here who think a spring seat should only be used on rigid.

what about this type of spring? at least it wouldn't be coils on the suspension and coils on the seat springs.

there will be a little bit of function because my coils will be so short they won't provide much suspension. nobody will know that though. i just don't want to look retarded. i already know not to wear figerless gloves or assless chaps. lucky for me i have leather pants that have an *** in them.

Redundant no. The spring mounted seat should give you a cushier ride, think of it as extra padding.
Not redundant for the bike either. A spring mounted seat does nothing to keep the rubber on the road or to protect the rest of the bike from bumps and jolts.
