Never, never, EVER leave it in gear and just use the clutch at a stoplight.

Use ATF (type "F") in the primary once you were getting enough HP to make the clutch slip in 4th.

Park nose downhill in case you had to push-start and remember to bounce your *** in sync with popping the clutch.

Your buddies could always just ride over and, if you weren't at home, just follow the trail of oil and parts to find you.

ETAs:

Harleys only had 3 torque settings:
...Low) Palm turns red.
...Medium) Knuckles turn white.
...High) Face turns red.

A pack of smokes was 10 cents at the BX.

A 3-finger lid was $10 (at least that's what I heard anyway).

A good ride at night was when the Lucas "Prince of Darkness" electrics would actually get you all the way home with the lights still working. I still have my old manual impact driver, you know the kind you whacked with a hammer. The most important thing in your tool box if you had a British bike.

I forgot to add: Sunoco 260. Man, that WAS jet fuel to the English Iron!

To the guy who "couldn't read all these posts"...you probably weren't there; I had to read them ALL, slowly. Maybe again, just for the images, and forgotten friends!

How many remember ditching all those unreliable and unnecessary pieces such as hydraulic lifters and electronic ignition just in case they failed somewhere near bum**** Egypt? Did you ever hear of that happening? Must have been the right choice.

Let's see a show of hands of those that saved 20 cents by not replacing the 2nd gear retaining clip and blew a hole in the bottom of their tranny? (My hand is up)

Who among us has used a big hammer, a torch and a cold chisel trying to remove a stuck compensator nut, only to find out it's a left hand thread?

Show of hands that overtightened their chain-oiler screw and broke it off? Who discovered that that position is the same as wide open? How many have more screw extractors than fingers?

In the past 5 years or so I've only seen one place that had free air. It was somehwere in WV. There was even a huge sign that said FREE AIR. I had to take a picture of it. LOL

Pretty soon we'll be paying a 25 cent toll just to get into the gas station parking lot. lol If that happens, I may move to Canada.

did the points, kick start, long rides just to go to a party we would hear about. camping just about anywhere.. sleeping on benches outside gas stations.. getting turned away by some motels.

I did this before... an older rider told me to try it.. I baked my clutch plates in the oven when they started slipping from being oil soaked. Sanding brake shoes and clutches.

sitting on the side of I70 with a knife, tape and wires rewiring the harness on the old 74' at night with just a lighter for light. (stripped her down after that run). It's been awhile but I think I had her running on 7 or maybe it was 9 wires (can't remember it's been awhile).

of the bike shops we still have one real bike shop around.. He's been in business a long time. Works on all makes and models.

I still have my buck.. I don't carry it anymore it's sits in a case with my other knives I've collected.
