I am a new Harley owner and have really enjoyed participating in this forum. It seems to me that there should be a separate forum dedicated solely to dealership comments and reviews so that all of the owners here could make their purchase and service decisions based on dealer performance and not just whatever happens to be closest to the house. I would much rather ride an extra hour to go to a great dealership for service than ride 10 minutes to go to a mediocre dealership.
I think it would be nice to have a forum where we could compile compliments and complaints about specific dealerships with running polls that would rate them based on performance. I spent a lot of my hard earned money on my baby and certainly don't want anyone laying their hands on her that has a history of not treating the bikes or customers with respect.
tizone, what an excellent idea. I don't take my softail to the local Harley dealership because of the quality of ( or lack of ) their work. I purchased 2 new tyres when I had my 16,000 ( 12,000 mls ) service done and the next day, to my horrer, as I was washing the bike I noticed the clamp that holds the front axle in place was missing. I rode 100 klms (60 mls ) home on my bike with the front wheel not fixed in place. The dealership didn't seem too concerned and just sent me a new clanp the next day in the mail. Pretty poor and dangerous service, eh??
So I think your idea for that forum is a very good idea. Well done.[sm=goodidea.gif]

At this point in life , I tinnk I would rather get a root canal without any injection than deal with a dealer again. I've had really no good experiences that I can were enjoyable with any of them, it seems once they get your money, their attitude changes
I can understand why you might feel that way. However, when you need to use a dealer for service to validate your warranty they become a necessary evil. I am not very mechanically inclined and I have to trust someone to take care of my ride. I would feel much better going to a dealer that others have had a good experience with rather than make an uninformed decision based on proximity and just take my chances. I really think that we could help each other out by sharing such critical information.
I also believe that if dealers knew that their service was being critiqued on sites like this it might inspire them to provide more customer oriented service. Harley's are the cream of the crop and they know it. At the same time we still have the ability to make choices as to where we decide to spend our money. The dealers need to realize this.
There seems to be a common, aparently dealer perpetuated, myth that to maintain your warranty that the dealer must do all your service work. WRONG! My 1K mile was done by a HD certified mechanic working from his home. The rest have been done by me. Just keep meticulous records and receipts and be prepared to call bullshit if some dealer **** gives you grief about it!
I have a hard time going down to the dealer here. I once rode a rigid shovel and of course they forgot what those were whenever I went down there for anything. I do go down for the annual open house to eat the free dogs and drink the free pop.... Five years later I run across this basket/wrecked softail. Things were pretty cool cause I spent about 1 thou on small parts and such that I couldnt find on ebay or the net while putting the thing up.
But as the big rush for all to buy H-D's came, they seem to not like the guy that works on his own scoot and wants to ask questions of the mechanics. So I dont ask anymore...I simply consult the service manual. I have located a H-D shop 60 miles away and they are more than happy to send parts, answer any seemingly silly question and the like. All my business will be done there.
