Seriously, why does this surprise anyone any more? Cagers will do what they do, ride hard and improve your time on earth.
Where did it say anyone was surprised ? I'm pretty sure I said I was looking at the cars just waiting for it, as in, anticipating it until it did happen..
A ricer passed me in the centre lane of I-295. I was moving from the left lane into the middle lane, did the mirror check, then the head check, moved into the lane and out of nowhere, there he is. Rolling at 70 mph, this guy goes by at least 30 mph faster. A few more inches more and we would have collided. Picture rush hour traffic and 2 motorcycles crashing in the centre lane.

It's not that they don't SEE you... they're AFTER you!
My father was riding before I was born. When he knew I wanted to ride too, his only advice was to ride "like the cars are out to kill you". Even though I do drive with this in the back of my mind I've had a few close calls... in heavy traffic I was passing a car and about even with his door when he decided he wanted my lane, NOW. He yanked the wheel after a quick glance at his mirror, which I saw so I just KNEW he was coming my way. I leaned left to try to keep away from him but he still squeezed my foot between his door and my bike. My air cleaner took off his mirror. I managed to keep it upright since my momentum was already heading away from him. I had dirt from his door all over my shoe when I got to work. Another time I was in the left lane of an interchange flyover when a guy in a Porsche decided to meander over into my lane. He crossed from the right lane, thru the center lane and started into my lane in one long slow lane change. My "out" was the wall to my left with a drop of about 50 feet to the highway running below. Since this guy was taking it nice and slow I did the only thing I could think of and started banging on the roof directly over his head. The look on his face was unforgettable as he tried to figure out why I was there and banging on his car. Thank God his panic made him yank the wheel back to the right!
It's not that they don't see you... they know right where you are and they want to kill you. My dad drove his bikes all over the U. S. and was NEVER in an accident. I've got about 150,000 miles on 2 wheels under my belt and I've managed to keep my body off the pavement so far. Paranoid? I don't think so, just very alert. Besides, just cuz you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT after you.
