Just got home from a quick cage trip to browse the 2011's today.
At one Phoenix Metro-area shop there was a black Street Glide parked next to a north-facing storefront window, which offered an excellent light to look at paint surfaces on that bike, and a few others nearby.
What I noticed was something that hurts me to say..."orange peel", as painters call it. That bumpy, less than perfectly smooth finish that resembles...you guessed it...an orange peel.
It wasn't just that this was my first time looking closely at a Hog...having owned 2 in Vivid Black, 1 in Aztec Orange over Diamond Ice, and one in Black Pearl. My Vivid Black bikes were 7 years apart, but each finish was as perfect as could be. Same with the other colors.
Not so this Hog. Then I started looking at others, and came away kind of upset that something I've come to expect and take for granted (the quality fit and finish of HD motorcycles) might have been allowed to slip.
I just bought the new Heritage pictured below last week. Looked at dozens of bikes over the last month and I never noticed much if any orange peel. I look for it too as I used to restore muscle cars.
Perhaps you just ran into a bad "batch" from the factory?? Another factor is that many of the newer bikes are metal flaked which can camouflage that pretty well unless you have a flashlight.
The new water based paint systems can throw up anomolies - Generally though the finish is still first class (anedotal evidence from looking aimlessly at harleys of all ages)
I'm getting ready to re-paint my wife's 2010 vivid black deluxe that she laid down last weekend. She wants it back to the way it was (stock paint) and the pressure is on because the factory paint on that bike is some of the best I've ever seen.

Nice ride, BC. My '04 was a great scoot. Wish I still had it. Black with dual fishtails and wide whitewalls. It was a be-atch to clean, but it looked great when detailed!

Good luck, hope you find somebody to do it up right!

Ebay for sure for the front fender which is pretty mangled but the other skins will be the originals.
