I think it's good to stay in shape , helps fight the fatigue of long rides. I work out at least 3 days a week . I don't focus on a specifc area , just total body .
I think for me helping to fight mental fatigue is the biggest benefit. I've let the working out slide over the past few months and I tried a longer ride this past weekend. It seemed like I was just getting mentally fatigued later in the trip (though the hot humid weather could have had something to do with that also). Ultimately, though, it feels like the better shape I'm in, the more mentally focused I am. So, I started getting back into the daily workout routine last night. We'll see if it helps out this weekend (if the weather isn't too crappy to ride).

And two guys were going to get on there Harleys.... one guy said "I have to burn off this tank before I put it away for the year". I thought to myself. Its only 55 degrees in the morning... what the heck??!!

We should all be in better shape than we are, but for me a busy work day combined with apathy keep me from working out as regularly as I should. I walk every day and it helps alot. Daily stretching of hamstrings and lower back keep my herniated disc from becoming too much of a problem. I don't have a backrest on my bike, but I do use a back brace when going more than just a few miles. It keeps me from slouching which plays hell with the lumbar area. If you don't exersize regularly (and I don't) at least walk. A daily walk of at least two to three miles will do alot of good.
