There is a "ladies only" section of the forum that can best advise.

If the woman wants to work on bikes it's a good starter. If she wants to ride bikes, not so much. IMO they are asking plenty for it.
I don't recommend Sportsters as starter bikes for anyone.
I recommend 600-750cc metric cruisers. Cheap, reliable and easy to handle.

Age and make may require some work to keep on the road. It is an old Sporty but it is a sweet looking old bike. The price isn't bad--seems a little on the low side if the bikes is in good shape. Have you drove any other bikes? I like Sportys but they aren't the best handling motorcycles. I wouldn't recommend this bike to someone unless they love to work on bikes and know how they ride.

I agree. Buy a used 500cc bike that's easy to ride and move up in size after she learns to ride. Many of the MSF classes used 500cc Buell Blasts to teach new riders.

$2K for an '84 IH Sporty is a good price...However, if that is a starting bid.....!

As already mentioned, an IH will require some maintenance...If you have plenty of tools and the knowledge to repair IH's, go for it!

If not, step back and read more input from the forum......

Personally, gender aside, I don't believe that an IH Sporty would be a good starter bike for anyone IMHO. I'd recommend a Buell Blast or similar.

Do you want her to keep riding? (two ways to read that question)

Get her a used Ninja 250 or something.

I've often heard the Honda Rebels are about the most user friendly for the beginning rider, fairly easy to re-sell to move up.
