RE: First ride with leather...and first time with no helmet.
I have full face for the colder weather and half helmets for the hot weather. I know they will probably not help me in a 60 mph T-Bone accident, or getting hit head on at speed.
RE: First ride with leather...and first time with no helmet.
I never wear my helmet when I am driving my car or truck although I think it could be beneficial in an accident. I guess sometimes I am just a risk taker. I wear a half helmet when it is really cold or raining really hard. I also never wear leathers during the hot summer. I respect those who ride with helmets. I respect those who ride without.

Thats why most pepes were a half instead of a full, its like not wearing anything.

Yesterday, I received my very first leather jacket, a Fox Creek Vented Racing Jacket. As soon as I got it out of the box, I put it on and went for a short ride. For some reason, I decided not to wear my helmet. I have only been riding for about six months, and this was the first time out without the hard-top. Riding with the leather felt awesome. It was a little cool here yesterday in Cleveland, and I was amazed at how comfortable my ride was. I don't know why, but I felt more secure on the bike wearing this jacket. Maybe because there was less buffetting from the wind, but whatever it was, I liked it. As far as not wearing the helmet...I liked the feel of that also. It is hard to describe, but I felt more aware of my surroundings without the helmet. This scares me a little, because I am a big proponent of wearing a helmet, and now I am going to be tempted to leave it home when I ride.
I am sure there have been many discussions on this forum about helmet vs. no helmet, but I would like to hear from those of you who wear a helmet--are there times when you go without one, and what influences your decision not to wear it?

Who came up with the peripheral vision argument about wearing a helmet? I wore a full face for my first ten years riding and never had a problem with peripheral vision. Someone else brought that up to me an I laughed in their face. Although I wear a half helmet when it is warm now, I still think it is a rediculous argument. Turn your head and you an see. this was never a factor in aany accident I was in. Not even close. I love my schott NYC leather jacket. It rules. Even after many years. I'm glad i live where we have a helmet law.
just how many accidents have you been in LOL...maybe if you didn't have your vision blocked by a helmet they could have been avoided
never figured my head was much good without a body attached to it , 100% support freedom of choice and IL ABATE

Thanks for all of the replies.
Until now, I have always worn a carbon fiber DOT approved 1/2 helmet. I think it is a good balance for me. It provides some protection, and lets me hear and see well. I think there will be times when I choose not to wear a helmet, but most likely this will be on short rides, in low traffic areas, and definitely not on the highway.
RE: First ride with leather...and first time with no helmet.
If you want to wear a helmet or not, that is your own business but I do have to say it sounds pretty stupid to say, in the same breath, how secure you feel wearing your leather but enjoy not wearing a helmet. DUHHHHHHHHHH !!

Ride safe.
You see that a lot; folks saying they wear a 1/2 or no helmet around the neighborhood but something more substantial on the highway.
Isn't there a statistic that tells us most accidents--bike and car, happen within a few miles of home? It seems to me that open highways and interstates are less dangerous for motorcycles than urban areas.
RE: First ride with leather...and first time with no helmet.
Personaly, I never wear a helmet, not required here. Every now and then someone will say, "you should be wearing a helmet" I resond, "you should go f$$% yourself". That usually ends the helmet conversation.
