Ahhh yes, harley did tell me to do that. However, I am like you and don't want to. I just want an air cleaner that works, it seems the plain jane chicken head a/c is the best, but I'm not going there.
I'm running a V&H naked VO2. $112 if you find the right place. Works great and you can put whatever cover you want on it. Most of the ones you're looking at you're paying big bucks for the cover.

I haven't had any problems with my Arlen Ness Big Sucker II...works like a champ, and only cost $140. I prefer the traditional round air cleaner type to the Screaming Eagle forward facing style. I powdercoated the cover plate black to match the rest of my bike, and I like the look...understated, simple and clean.
I like what RSD has to offer as far as style and functionality, but the prices are up there. Usually in the $400 to $500 range. Here is a link to the company's site: http://www.rolandsandsdesignparts.co...px?display=839
Also, one you might not have seen before is the Cycle Visions Mo-Flow Air Cleaner. Nice clean, sleek style in gloss or flat black. And it costs less, about $300. http://www.cyclevisions.com/cv-acces...-air-cleaners/
Or, you could just go with a K&N round cleaner with a custom cover. There are countless choices available.
