If you ride with others, you need to switch bikes with your friend, and follow him. See if you would want to ride behind your bike. Know a few guys that just think louder is better. no way I'm riding with those guys.
Very good point. Back in the early 80s I went on a ABATE run. The guy in front of me was riding a shovel with straight drag pipes. He would back off then open the throttle all the way. By the time we got to the run site I was ready to choke him to death. And I let him know it. The kicker was. It was not even his bike. Some dumbass friend had let him borrow it. That is what memories are made of.
Obviously the loud pipes are detracting from your happiness and the happiness of others.
Man up, put some decent mufflers on your bike and enjoy it more.
Just traded my 04 Train with V&H pipes for a 2011 Street Bob. Thinking about just going with Screaming Eagle exhaust instead of something louder. It will be awhile though...
You gotta do what's right for YOU . When I was younger I had a Triumph with straight pipes and just small baffles in them and it was LOUD ! It did make me feel guilty or embarrassed or whatever and I used to try not to crack the throttle too much . Now at 52 , for some reason I just don't give a $hit what others think about it . That said , when I bought the Road King I have now the pipes on it where so loud they even bothered ME while riding it . So I changed them to something thats still pretty loud , but not loud enough to drive me nuts when I ride . So I guess what I'm saying is you need to make the bike to whatever makes it the most fun for YOU to ride it . After all , it's your bike .
NASA studied the effects of the MUCH louder noises rocket/shuttle launches have on the environment and animals around the lauch area, which as we all know is a Federal Reserve.
Both animals and plants seem to just plain not really care. Noise might startle them, but 30 seconds later they're all normal.
So...ya think the guys on a fire truck feel guilty about the loud siren ? My pipe is really loud and a$$clowns still pull over on me...yea, I feel terrible about all the AH's trying to kill me.

My Road King was in the shop for a couple of days. (Dresser Duals/Monster Rounds)
I had a Loaner that had straight pipes on it. I felt a little bad rolling out of the neighborhood at 6:30 AM, I have a good relationship with the folks around me.
Then I went into a parking garage and romped the throttle. Flashing headlights and sirens everywhere. It brought out my inner juvenile delinquent, and I felt better.
