Well, I'm glad to say that through my 55 years and visits to 49 of the 50 states (haven't been to LA) I have never had the need for a weapon of any kind. I've never seen a tornado, never been struck by lightning and I've never fallen down.
But I have stared down the wrong end of a gun fully expecting that in the next instant my brains were going to be splattered over the sidewalk, my wife a widow and my children fatherless. God willing, it won't happen a second time.
All the pros and cons aside, it's a personal decision that's guaranteed by our Constitution. Each of us are entitled to make that decision based upon our own individual needs and wishes. That's our right. PERIOD!!!
