i'm not following your logic here. one guy said it was worth the price he paid (which was zero). another guy gave it a thumbs up for the towing. other than those 2 posts, there were no other replies before you said that.....
seems you had already made up your mind and just wanted some affirmation that you made the right choice.
me personally, i found that it wasn't worth the price of postage. the towing left me stranded for over 6 hrs, the social functions are way overpriced, and the pins and patches, well, i'm not putting them on my vest.....
hope you enjoy it more than i did.
skratch...thanks for your comments. Contrary to what you seem to think, I had not made up my mind before my original post and still haven't. I'm not looking for confirmation from anyone about a choice I made because I haven't made a choice yet. I guess you can assume whatever you want. Again, thanks for sharing your experiences. That is what I was looking for all along.
$40.00 a year membership. X 1,000,000 members=$40,000.000.
Does that answer your question? For what?
Im done with it when mine expaires in March.....
It is a great idea dont get me wrong but it just doesnt pay back for what you put into it every year. Flame me on towing if you wish, but when you breakdown on the road you are screwed until the tow vechicle gets there if you need one, and it does'nt matter if its one you called on your own, or one that HOG sends out. JUST SAYIN..........
If its 1 Million members and $40.00 it would be $40 million not $40,000.
Edit: Im assuming you meant to put a comma at the 1st period and only 2 zeros behind it. If thats the case than you would be right with $40mil
I don't go to their rallies or belong to a local chapter but enjoy the benefits. Emergency road service has saved my *** before. I really like the touring handbook. I used to enjoy H.O.G. Tales until it was combined with Enthusiast. Discounts on phone and Best Western are good deals too. I bought a life membership a long time ago and am glad I did.
A previous post said it best...If you take advantage of what they're offering, then sure, it's worth it.
For me, it was not worth it. I'm not involved with a local chapter, I don't collect pins and patches and the "magazine" is really just 25 pages of Harley advertisements and testimonials about how great the MoCo is. I did enjoy the mapbook, but I can get the same Rand Mcnally "mini atlas" down at Barnes & Noble for $7.99. And yeah, it won't show me where all of the HD dealers are in every state, but I don't collect tshirts, either. As far as roadside assistance, my insurance company has a more attractive package than HOG and it's way cheaper ($16 a year!). That's my $0.02 worth.
What can you tell me about HOG? Is this just another money-making venture for HD or does it have some worth? As one friend puts it, HD stand for Hundred Dollars.
Some people don't like it and to read the stuff here it seems like some of them have pretty crappy local chapters. However, for us it's pretty good. The members are Pretty good people and they schedule plenty of good rides that are anywhere from 80 miles to hundreds of miles and overnighters. they ride to Daytona and Cherokee and various rallies and stuff like that. The monthly meeting rides often go into other states and they have the meetings at restaurants - last weekend was scheduled for riding the motorcycles for laps on the Kentucky Speedway (Nascar track) followed by lunch at a casino in Indiana, but it got cancelled due to weather. They do the Speedway ride every year. They also seem to mostly be pretty good riders and the group rides are well managed. They have a Christmas party coming up next month and they had an early thanksgiving dinner last week. So there are lots of good activities.
My wife also really like the group riding and the magazine is pretty good.
I have never used the roadside assitance or the HD discount (I never buy things at the dealership).
If you are not interested in participating, you'd probably be as well off with AAA roadside assitance or something and the 10% discount at the dealer isn't all that much (but easily more than the cost of membership).

Just looking at it for somebody who doesn't want to participate:
This year, they paid me and my wife $50 in HD gift certificates for going to the MSF Experienced Rider Course (not even a HD course).
We get 10% off various things at the dealer (parts and accessories, I think) so a $400 set of saddlebags and your membership would pay for itself.
$40 a year for membership and they pay $100 toward the tow truck they send out, according to one post above, so you'd be ahead $60 on the year if you needed a tow.
I can't see how it's a lsos even for non-participating types.
I did talk to one guy I work with who said he didn't join HOG bacause the people at the local chapter looked like a bunch of old-time bikers from the 70's riding ratty old dirty Harleys, but that sounded pretty good to me - my local chapter is way too upscale and clean.
You get as much as you put into it. A local chapter is were the people to ride with are. If you go out with the group you could meet people that ride like you want to and do the things you like to do. Of course you may not meet any one you like. You will never know if you don't try.
We are life members and have belonged to a chapter for 18 years. Some times the rides are so much fun other times they suck. But we have friend all over the country because of HOG. Overall my experiance with HOG is positive, there is always something to do, not that I can participate all the time but it is there.
