Chapters will let you ride with them without being a member to see if you feel like you want to join. So I would recommend that. If your local chapter is a great group of people you have fun with, then it's worth it. If you feel like they are a bunch of bozos then it won't be worth it. As for towing, get it on your insurance and don't worry about it from HOG.

Just looking at it for somebody who doesn't want to participate:
This year, they paid me and my wife $50 in HD gift certificates for going to the MSF Experienced Rider Course (not even a HD course).
We get 10% off various things at the dealer (parts and accessories, I think) so a $400 set of saddlebags and your membership would pay for itself.
$40 a year for membership and they pay $100 toward the tow truck they send out, according to one post above, so you'd be ahead $60 on the year if you needed a tow.
I can't see how it's a lsos even for non-participating types.
I did talk to one guy I work with who said he didn't join HOG bacause the people at the local chapter looked like a bunch of old-time bikers from the 70's riding ratty old dirty Harleys, but that sounded pretty good to me - my local chapter is way too upscale and clean.

roadside assistance is included free of charge with my insurance. and they will pay to tow it to the nearest dealer, not just the first $100.00
and they gave you certificates to reimburse you some for the cost of the msf course. i know not everyone has this benefit, but i can take the course for free (hence no reimbursement)....
some like it, some don't, have to pays your money and takes your chances.....
