I've had 4 Vanson jackets over the years, 2- model B and 2- R&R which was a cross between the C-2 and Hard Core. They will last forever, or until you get too fat to wear them, hence the 4 jackets. They'll take a long time to break in, maybe a couple of years, don't hang them up, just toss them on the bed or floor. But they loosen up and stretch to fit you. They are very well made and cut to be worn on a bike, just standing around the sleeves will be long and the body seem short and tight. But on the bike they fit and feel perfect. Vanson is getting their leather from South America and sometimes it takes them awhile to get leather that they like and is up to their standards.
Looking at the Comet and the Drifter I felt the Comet was too short, you want something to cover the small of your back when you reach the handlebars. The Drifter looked too light weight for use at 50 or below.
I also have an FXRG. It's a much more versatile jacket than the Vansons in my opinion. It's cut longer so you have good coverage in cold weather. It has zippered vents for when the air is warm and they are fairly water resistant. Mine also has some armor and a kidney belt. It has a good removable liner that has sleeves, the Vanson liners are only body, no sleeves.
I like a jacket that you can wear a wool sweater under for when it gets real cold and the FXRG is cut loose enough for that. Though my thinner Gerbing heated jacket fits under the Vanson.
I think the Vanson is more stylish but the FXRG is more versatile and better for winter riding.
Check on eBay, that's where I found my FXRG.
There's a lot of cow in my closet!!
Thank you all for the advice, very helpful. I got a deal on a new FXRG and went with it. It's been cold here in the mornings(not Canada or Wisconsin cold, but cold for us) and the FXRG looked most versatile. Next time I'll get a Vanson, I really like those also. Thanks again.
Congrats on your new FXRG. I've had jackets with great leather and now prefer leather jackets with great features. Might get one of those for myself, someday.
