I am not required to have one in either state that I live in (CT and SC), but I never ride without it. With that said, however, I'll always feel that no one should be required to wear one.
Helmets are not legally required here, however; I try to wear mine as much as possible but when it gets 110 + degrees outside, that gets a little difficult.
Grew up in a helmet free state (SD), bought a helmet after the last wreck that broke my elbow. Could have easily broken my noggin on what my elbow took the hit on. Been wearing one since, 17 years and will continue to wear one.
Helmet free state here........sometimes i will, sometimes i wont, depends how I feel that day. However, if it's cold I'm wearing one, just more comfortable for me.
Maybe a bit off topic, but I just got a new full face helmet. I've been wearing it when it's cold, but I find it really restrictive as far as head movement goes. I can't see or hear nearly as well with it on, not sure how this could be safer.
What brand, I have several full face helmets, I don't find any of them restrict my head movement, but they do require I do more head movement to see around me. I have never noticed any issues hearing with my full face helmets on, I do have problem being heard. Seems everyone wants to start a conversation before we pull out, but after I get my helmet on.
As a majority of accidents happen within a five mile radius of your home, I always wear mine locally now. And sometimes other times as well. Some days I feel just a bit better prepared and or comfortable with it on. I do like riding without, but I did get sideswiped recently on the way home from work, and I was not wearing.
