I really don't know. This is my first Harley in twenty years of riding, mostly on metric baggers. The things I really dig about it are the same things you can get with any big twin. The "beat" that the bike has, the sound, the ride. I'll never convert it to it's "cruiser" identity, as the bags are too handy. I like the windshield, though I'd trade anyone my shorty for a stock height one. It's like having an ultra, but without all the distractions. It's just a damn cool ride. It's as easy to handle around town as it is to take it on a thousand mile cc trip. I can tow a trailer, if I want. The list goes on forever...
What are you trading up from? The more I ride my RK, the more I like it. It handles nice, it has bags to carry stuff, I have begun to customize it - pegs, bars, grips, controls etc. I don't like the seat, so I am trying to choose my best option. I have big plans for this bike - custom paint, motor. It is a $ pit, but it is my therapy.
I am onto my 2nd RoadKIng Classic, just short of 30K miles on an 03! what I like is it fits me, at 6ft 3 and full sized, I have more room than on ANY other Harley, even an Ultra, because the cushioned seat on the big glides pushes me too far forward. So I have more room and with the kicked out forward pegs I can go alll day in comfort. Like any bike you can set it up just for me, but the basic RKC is just my sort of bike. I also have an 01 Fatboy which I love, but if I could only have one bike it would have to be a Road King.
the sundowner saddle will cure being to forward on ultra. one of my riding buddies just got one a couple of weeks ago for his 05. i have had one on my 01 RK since new and have over 60K miles on it. what i like about the RK over a softail is the road feel. on the three softails i test road, the fat boy was for over 300 miles, it felt like the bike wasn't touching the road. way to squishy for my taste but i have had a lot of sportster and superglide miles under my belt before the RK.
I have an '06 RK Classic and love it. It' also my first Harley. I love how it handles
on the highway, rock solid. I use it to commute to work about 130 - 150 miles
(depending on my route home) round trip and on weekend trips. The saddle bags
are great for storing stuff and I plan to get a Tourpac next year. I think the cruise
control is awesome and I use it all the time on the highway. I also like that the windshield
is detachable if I just want to go for some short hops around town. This bike fits my
riding profile perfectly.
I also did a Stage 1 upgrade with the SE air filter, V&H Oval slip-ons, a SERT and
had it dyno'd. This was by far the best money I spent on the bike.
My RK CLassic is my second Harley with my first being a Heritage Softail.
Let's see... My '06 RK has a great ride, looks good, fits the wife and I better, has cruise control, the 88A "wiggle" motor, bigger bags, twin pipes out the back, idles slower with the "potato-potato" sound than my 88B motor, carries more, comfortable for long rides, handles great, and did I say it looks good?
I miss the softail, but I think the RK fits me better...
I am on my second Road King Classic. I like everything about them. Old school leather bags. NO fairing etc but still get ride in touring style. The bike is very nimble for a big bike. A little under powered in stock form but nothing a stage one or even more fun a high compression Stage Two can't help. I am planning on buying another one next year. All I can say is great bike with great style.

I have a question. The RK custom costs as much or not more than the classic or standard. There is no windshield, solid tires, but it seems to sit lower then the other two. What are the differences that are reflected in the cost.
My Road King is my second Harley Davidson. My First was a 01 Softail Standard That I rode the heck out of for three years, and loved it. My Dad has a 02 Road King and I was always loading his bags with my stuff. So in in the winter of 04 I decided I was going to make the switch. My Softail was Fuel injected and it road very nice. But their is no comparision to the ride of the Road King at all. Knowing that their was talk that Harley Davidson was soon going to stop making their Bike's Carbureted, and loveing the sound of my dad's RK sitting at idle. I went that that route and never regreted it for one second. I plan on keeping my RK for ever. I wouldn't trade it for any other bike ever made.
