Make sure you pre-fill the filter prior to starting it. Other wise the engine will run without oil for a few seconds, not good. Prefill filter add oil and go for a ride.
I can't speak for anyone else but my oil level reads higher on the stick when good & hot as in the summer as compared to cooler weather, usually about a third of a quart. I use 3 & 1/2 quarts at change including pre-filling filter.

No chit.. Sounds like a mess to me. If a oil can't protect and engine for a few seconds then I would say it isn't very good oil.
Once you figure out how much oil to use, write it in your manual. I know mine is shy of the recommended amount. But I have trained my brain to automatically forget things like that.
The paper in the filter will soak up the oil, I just pour it bout 1/2 full, let it soak up and a little more, not so much it runs out when reinstalling the new one..
>>if you put the full 4 qts in and run it hard, you will (probably) end up with some oil puking out the ac.<<
Maybe it's just me, but I never understood that. I mean you could tow a fifty gallon drum full of oil behind you and your motor is only going to use as much oil as it normally uses. The head breathers blow out oil because it's a sucky EPA design change from the crankcase breathers that used to route that oil to the ground.
