I read recently (I think somewhere on this forum) that Harley was now going to offer the option of ordering your new bike with whatever option you want on it. Similar to the way you can order a car with different trim packages, wheels or engine. I am interested in buying my first Harley, a 2011 Road King Classic. But I am not a fan of the leather bags or white walled tires and would like the hard bags and regular tires. Also, as a shorter rider, I'd like to swap out the standard windshield for a shorter one, and perhaps a "Reach" seat to make it easier to flat foot the bike. And I would appreciate not having to take delivery of a bike with the standards parts on it only to have to buy the shorter windshield and seat, and have to keep the OEM parts in my basement to gather dust.
The problem is that although I did see this option on the Harley website from a link in the original post, I can't seem to find it again by going directly to the Harley website.
Anyone have the link of instructions on how to access this option on the Harley website?
next, why are you looking at a road king classic when you don't like any of the things that make it 'classic'? just go with the road king standard and add what you want instead of completely replacing them? unless its the 103" engine that you're after..... and even that is doable. just not from the factory.
At the International Motorcycle Show in Novi, MI the HD salesman said you'll be able to order seat, bars, windscreen and it will be installed at the factory at 33% off the list item price. The bike builder program is the same but with chrome parts. Some one else said it will only be available on the Sportster to start.

Because I figure it's easier and less expensive to change the cosmetic/minor things I don't like about the Classic (tires, seat, windshield), than to add cruise control, ABS and the 103 in engine.

maybe, maybe not. to add the abs and cc to the road king standard would raise the msrp to 18,489. on the road king classic, msrp is 19,499. add a conservative estimate of 2,000 to the road king for the dealer to do the 103 package before delivery (which makes it included in the new vehicle warranty) and that raises the msrp to 20,489, which makes the cost 990.00 higher on the modified road king standard. do you think you can get hard saddlebags, different wheels, and tires for that cost?
ultimately, the decision is yours, and as long as you're happy, that's all that counts. either way, you will end up with a nice ride.
