I have done searches on these questions on this site and elsewhere, but have not received solid answers. I now appeal to the experts regarding my 2010 FatBoy and various tires:
opinions on Metzler 880 vs HD Dunlop 407. How is mileage between the two? How about sidewall height? Do they ride differently or cause the bike to sit differently?
I've heard that some wider numbered tires are actually narrower than other brands with a lower number.
What is the widest rear tire that can be placed on a 2010 FatBoy with a stock swing arm?

Much thanks in advance!
I can only speak on the Metzlers.....they were my tires of choice for a lot of years due to their wet weather handling and all around longevity...however, my confidence in them has been shaken since they started producing them in Brazil. I find the tires made in Germany are the best out there but the ones produced in Brazil tend to cup and fail within a short amount of time.(and that's my first hand experience with the two) I don't find the Metzlers sit differently than the DL's due to the sidewalls. The Metzlers do handle really well on wet or dry roads almost like the rubber is made out of superglue, they stick to the road like you wouldn't believe.
I was told by a licensed HD mechanic that I couldn't put a wider read tire on the bike than it came stock with I ran the risk of rubbing against the belt and the inside of the fender when I hit bumps in the road. The "apparently" already have the widest tires that can go on them without making other kinds of changes.
hope some of this helped

People generally like their new tire more than they like the old worn-out tire that they replaced. It's perfectly understandable.
Since H-Ds usually come with Dunlops, it's not surprising that some people will like the new tire that they replace the Dunlops with.
I've got a buddy who replaced his Metzelers with Dunlops on his Moto Guzzi, and he LOVES his Dunlops.
I had real good luck with Dunlop Elite 3s on my last Road Glide, and I really liked the way the bike turned into corners with them. My indee mechanic says my last rear tire lasted 15,000 miles. I replaced it two days before the bike got totalled.
I went from dunlops to metz, didn't like the way the center rib on the dunlops followed grooves and what not on the road. The metz's seem to give a more stable road feel.

I hear great things about the Elite 3, but they don't seem smart enough to offer them on 17" rims, such as on my FatBoy. Then again, I'm not certain of their load rating. I like my Dunlop 407s, but lack experience with other tires and have no real frame of reference. It just seems that after 3,000 miles of very easy riding, almost always 1 up at 200 pounds including gear, I'm seeing excessive wear for properly inflated tires.
ps: glad you only totaled your bike and not yourself!

ditto on the stability, noticed it immediately first time out with them on the bike - night & day difference. Go with Metz's you'll be glad you did.
