My dad had much the same opinion -- his idea of an oil change was to "change the filter and add a quart."
To a certain extent, this is quite true. However, we no longer use purely oil in modern vehicles. They contain additives that have a very specific purpose and bond differently to certain metals. At various viscosiites oil additives can break down faster causing more long term damage to the motor.
Swapping the filter is the best method and did that in my older vehicles, but once I got into Corvettes, I changed the oil at about the 5,000 mile mark. My favorite Vette (had 3) had nearly 200,000 miles when I traded her for the last one I owned.
I plan on changing the oil in my Harley as close to the 3,000 mile mark as I can and will be using motorcycle oil (20W 50) every time, though it will not be HD brand...
So what's the recommended interval for changing the oil, thats the part I didn't see on that chart. As for my bike I change it at about 5k though it should be fine to go 10k using amsoil with a filter change at 5k. On my '99 chev. work van i change it about every 15k with a filter change at 5k, it's got 267k on it now.
Recommended interval is 5k, the owners manual is the place to find when ('03 Dyana WG has 1k 5k 10k etc). Oil lives forever, but the additives breakdown over time. Changing the filter will eliminate the particulates from the oil supply but will do nothing to replace the detergents.
