There is definately a difference between cheap, and not cheap...but cheap is all relative.
I've seen jackets as cheap as 70 bucks. Lightweight things they are.
My leather is from Open Road Leathers. They are heavy, have a removeable Thinsulate liner.
I didn't pay 500 bucks for them....
Hit a dog one night, then promptly hit the asphalt, only got a scuff on the right shoulder of my jacket. The pain in my collarbone was something else!
I wouldn't pay 500 for a jacket unless it came with a lifetime warranty, due to workmanship (zipper or seams ever break) even it if were 20 years old. Or if the leather ever rips for no matter what reason....
So check this out! Very productive 160 mile virgin run on my new Lo today, down to Canon City, then Pueblo and back home. I stopped to talk to some folks I know and one is a former biker. He wrecked a few years ago, hurting his head very bad and no longer rides. He is selling me his top of the line Harley Davidson Chaps for $100.00, plus his gauntlet and regular gloves, all like new.
Then I talk to a friend who knows Pueblo real well and asked him where to look for a jacket. He said a friend gave him one that is too small for him and he does not ride bikes. It fits me perfect so he gave it to me. Beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, eh?
Can't beat that. Also those gauntlet gloves will be a lot more useful than you think, when it gets cold. I rode for a long time with regular gloves in the cold, until I discovered that.

Yes indeed. When I left in the morning it was still 20 f degrees out. I had on some lightweight gloves for summer and had to stop twice going down the canyon to warm up my hands. I couldn't wait to get to town to buy some real gloves but by the time I got there, it was 55 degrees. It was 78 on my way home.
I'm looking forward to wearing those gauntlets. I'm also going to need some kind of storage on my Lo to put all the stuff I strip off as it gets warm.
