If that was true the oil companies would be able to build new refineries and up capacity, they would be drilling for oil here...
Hate to tell you this, but congressmen don't drill, the oil producers do.
Like everything, people buy the cheapest first (the reason Wal-Mart & China have done so well). The U.S. has oil reserves, but it's more expensive than middle east oil reserves because of a number of factors, including the depth, difficulty & labor costs. When oil was cheap in the late 90's, U.S. production was virtually nothing. I saw wells shut down because it cost more to pump the oil out of the ground than it would sell for. Now that's reversed & rigs are out drilling new holes like crazy.
So yes, the U.S. has oil reserves & could be much more self-sufficient, but it would cost us more to do so than to buy the middle-eastern oil.
you also need to realize that the Oil companies are NOT ALLOWED to drill here. When was the last time even a new refinery was allowed to be built?
I'm probably gonna hear some crap for this but here goes anyway.
My truck gets around 10 - 11 MPG. My Superglide gets around 33 - 35 MPG (around town). The little Honda I didn't get rid of when I bought my Harley gets around 55 - 59 MPG on regular ethanol junk gas. Guess what I'll be riding to work this summer? Even considering getting one of those 50cc scooters for commuting. 22 miles round trip, no highway miles. As long as I wear a full face helmet so no one recognizes me then WTF.
Don't get me wrong. Love my Harley and my truck but simple economics dictate...
Plus it will make the weekend rides on the Harley just that much more enjoyable.
OK, flame away.
my sporty gets around 45-50 most of the time

Ye, but then they would have a hard time justifying the high cost of the energy the sale us.
You really have no clue, and like so many others, buy what the media hypsters are selling.
Besides, if they really needed to justify the price, they would make it comparable to what European countries pay, which the libs think we should be paying anyways.

Yep, just ask those poor little porcupine caribou. Who just happen to be be squatting on one of the largest pockets of oil sitting under U.S. soil, that the tree huggers say have to be protected. Every time someone tries to drill somewhere they come up with some bullsht excuse to keep the drills out.
