I just moved to Michigan from Alaska and rode in W.V when I was a teenager but have never had to deal with city traffic and crowed interstates. How long is it going to take me get comfortable in this riding enviroment? I'll have to admit I'm a little tense out there.
You will never get comfortable and you don't want to. You will learn only to get used to it and that's about it. You have to be on your toes always.
Dont ever get comfortable, city, interstate or country riding all present different challenges and someone or something out there is just waiting to get ya. The moment you get comfortable thats when it will happen. Ride safe and always be aware of your surrondings.............BG
I agree with sj. I find morning traffic in michigan very business like. highways are packed but speeds are safe and if you are midful, it is better than evening joy ride when nascar racers and crotch rockets will push you over.
I hate it but sometimes you have to do it. I expect every cager to do something stupid, I ride defensively. I stay away from big trucks and those little cagers with the trash can exhausts. They lie back on their recliners and don'y ever look before changing lanes. I need to strap a .50 cal on the handlebars.... might make me feel better.
Im in Michigan too and I think we have some of the worst roads and drivers in the country out here. I have only had my Sporty a few weeks after having been away from riding for about 8 years, I still havent gone on the freeway yet. Well Ive tried to avoid full on rush hour traffic altogether so far until I get more of my confidence back. Most freeways oout here people are bumper to bumper running 10+ mph over the speed limit.
i live in MI too, i agree about bad drivers here in MI. i like to ride the busy roads at night when they arent as congested to get to know my route well. otherwise i would take back roads. once im used to the busier routes i tackle them with traffic. if i feel uncomfortable i'll get off and take back roads the rest of my route. i traveled I-94 the other day for about 10 minutes and had enough of rush hour traffic and found a wonderful country road where all the leaves were turning, yesss more like it!
