Yesterday here in Kansas it was warm warmest day this year by far but it was windy, how windy was it? It was so windy... hell I cant think of a punch line but i bet is was a sustained 20mph with up to 40mph gusts.
Wife and I hop on the bike and head straight into the wind for about 50 miles it was awesome but it was getting dark and I cant see worth a crap in the dark so we turn around and head for home this time with the wind at our backs if you have done this you know the feeling.
So any way I notice the sky has turned black over exactly where are heading and I say "i think we will make it" of course I jinxed my self.
By this time we are riding with a crosswind its getting dark and I have on my sunglasses so I stop and put on my regular non riding glasses so I can see, we make it about 10 blocks and right as we start heading into some road construction BAMN! I swear it was a 50 mph gust right in the side full of sand leaves and whatever the wind could pick up and it blows all of the 4 foot cones over right in front of us, I am thinking crap I picked the wrong street today when one of the cones lodges under my front tire (I guess I wasn't going fast enough to get over it) and the front tire starts sliding around like I am on ice so then I start thinking ohh **** this is gonna hurt. But, just as I feel it starting to slide out from under me the tire makes it over the cone and I have just enough time to get my foot out and catch my self except my foot is on the curb and I cant move it because I am just about to tip over, thats when my wife dives off the bike straightens me up and pulls the cone out from under the bike.
Hold on, I aint done yet! Soon as we get rolling the rain hits and it is cold as hell coming down like a monsoon and we have no choice but to make it to shelter as soon as possible, the only problem was we had to make it through about 2 more blocks of toppled cones a 2 foot drop to the right and oncoming traffic to the left and the cars in front of us we driving about 5 mph, on top of that my regular glasses block zero rain so the rain is hitting me right on the eyeballs.
We made it! Pulled it into a quick trip under the gas pump awning wiped the crap out of our pants and had a good laugh. I cant wait to get back out there but I think I will skip that street for a while

Spent time @ Fort Riley a long time ago; Junction City, of course. Some places in Kansas there's not a lot to slow down the wind. They made us trade all our winter clothing for jungle clothing a week or 2 before getting shipped out to Vietnam--in JANUARY! We seriously froze our @sses off. Little did we know what was in store for us.
