They could care less about HD tats...free advertising....and the tat shops don't, in aggregate, amount to a serious copyright problem for HD....tat flash is just paper. But create a product you're marketing with a resemblance to an HD logo....and their attorneys will rip you a new *******. I knew a guy who wanted to make (and sell) beautifully crafted stainless steel coffee tables with a plasma cut HD logo. He asked permission, which was promptly denied, and received a bundle of official 'cease and desist' papers from HD. They are only interested in marketing via huge outlets (primarily the boutique dealerships they've forced their franchise holders to build), not mom & pop operations.
Frankly, I'd rather **** off a HA chapter than get on the wrong side of HD's corporate attorneys.
I remember reading about a mom and pop shop making a few bucks on non-licensed items.
Harley stated they actually didn't have a problem with the very small market the people had, but they had to defend their copyright or it would be used against them in court as precedent of allowing non-licensed products.
There would only be a problem if you started producing them for sale and/or profit. To make something like that for your own personal use would not be a problem.
