When I'm rolling towards the beach on Sundays I go by serial Churches and through some small towns always shift early and try not to roll on the gas very hard to be a good guy. BURRRRBBBUUUBBBB
And that, IMO, is the way to ride..."respect your surroundings and other people". Ride quietly where you should, and when the roads open up and you're away from peeps and neighborhoods....NOW you can crank it up and enjoy the roar.
My pipes aren't stock cigars either, and I'll enjoy their music when I'm out there....I just open 'em up when I'm not in an area where I'll be obnoxious or annoying to peeps.
I might agree with you if it weren't for the fact that when I am in my cage driving down the freeway I can still hear motorcycles with loud pipes behind me before they ever come close to "90 degrees across the bow". Granted they are louder when they are "90 degrees across the bow" or just passed me, but I can still hear them before they ever reach that point. When I first hear them I can look in my rear view mirror and see them coming and look forward to them passing me so I can check out the bike as they ride by.
I suppose that will be a perpetual debate. Some people that have their senses aware of their surroundings, like yourself, are a (IMO) growing minority these days. I've found the majority of drivers out there are greatly more "insulated" from their surroundings in todays vehicles.
I too get anxious to await a bike passing me so I can hear it's pipes. Or a muscle car for that matter...I even just did that a few days ago, a nice Challenger Hemi in the other lane, it was a cool morning so I had my heat on, I moved one lane to the right so I could pull up next to him..and I rolled down my window just to hear that nice exhaust note.
Years ago most drove around in "warmer" weather with their windows down, and you can hear much more. Now-a-days I notice in summer days, most cars are buttoned up tight, A/C blower keeping them cool inside, stereo turned up to drown out the A/C blower sound.....they can't hear a car skidding towards them with all 4 wheels locked and screeching.
As far as loud pipes bringin down noise ordinances ..bull. Those epa laws were comin from the control freak, power mad, political pimps whether we were loud or not. And you might not hear me comin up from behind but I promise you will feel me a long time before I get there. It's like the force in Star Wars it just washes over you. from a ways off I can see the heads turn to the rearview to find me.
Around here is mostly Harley Davidson, and some of these enthusiasts feel the need to be the loudest kid on the block.Years ago I would have been in the middle or front of the pack. Now it is a little annoying when out back wanting some peace and quiet. Oh well it's a free country, changing a lot but still free!
IN our town seems like the kids corral every weekend, about 20-40 of them, and run around town all day on there CR's.
Get that many kids together and U don't have many brains working,, just young male Testosterone trying to out do each other.
Seems like every stop light 1/2 of them either do burn outs or wheelies down the street.
..
didn't you guys do that when you were young. I did.
Speaking of Boats and Jet Ski noise....I really get annoyed when they are qualifying for the heat races at Buhlow lake with those little stinger racing boats.
I live off of 28E and I can hear those suckers. I really need to get out there and watch them one day. It looks pretty cool.
I like my noise maker, I like to sit at the red light and rev the **** out of it. Everyday I pass through a tunnel, and I try to hit that bitch doing 40 in first gear so I can just be as obnoxiously loud and **** as many people off as possible.
This is one reason why more states will follow California's lead and create noise-level statutes for motorcycles.
It's all about respect. You can have loud pipes and wind through the gears without redlining in each gear. I've owned sport bikes too, and yes, they can also be respectful if they want. There's a guy down the road from me that thinks waking up people in the neighborhood is a fun thing to do on Sunday mornings. He's on a harley, btw, with big radius pipes. He too could wind through the gears respectfully without being as aggressive, but no, he has something to prove. My pipes are not as loud as the big radius pipes, but they can still set off car alarms. I choose to ride in residential areas with respect to the people that live there. It's common sense, but some people have no idea what that is...and that applies to all motorcycle models with loud or high performance pipes.
