I rode from south side of Houston to northern Arkansas (550 miles) last Friday and made the return trip on Monday (07 Wide Glide, stage 1). On the return trip I had a killer head wind that kicked my butt all day. I was cruising 70-75 in both directions except when speed limit reduced in small towns. The mileage on the trip up was 41.7mpg and the mileage on the return with head wind was 37.4mpg. I didn't calculate the mileage until I got home, but one fill up on the trip back held 4.77 gallons. That got me thinking about the mileage (I usually expect 40 and wasn't quite getting that).
Oh yeah, I also rode 250 miles on Sunday around some narrow curvy roads in northern Arkansas with a friend who lives there and knows his way around. Weather was great, scenery was excellent. Glad I made time for the trip. It will be summer soon in Houston and Hot, Hot, Hot.
Hit a headwind going uphill a few years ago and got such lousy mileage I thought I wasn't going to get to a gas station in time. Mileage per gallon dropped about 25%. Now I pay attention to the headwinds.
What part of Arkansas ?
I'm in the NW ( Fayetteville ) and we do have some great roads.
Hope you enjoyed your ride.
I have family that lives close to Drasco (which is between Heber Springs and Batesville). North and west from there is a lot of nice riding. Wish I had those roads around Houston.
