Default Voltage regulator question

I'm having a charging problem. Was at bike week and dealer checked regulator and stator while bike was cold and said it was OK. Got 60 miles away heading home and it dropped to 10 volts again. Can a regulator check out ok cold and fail when hot?
Also, I was checking a couple of things today and noticed the regulator was pretty warm in less than a minute of bike running. Is that normal?

I had a similar problem and all it was was a bad connection where stator plugs into reg.Was told this is a common problem.

Not sure how they checked it. I have it at my indy now. I'll let you know what he finds.

I just had this problem with my bike. The wire at the stator was comming loose and sometimes it made ac voltage and sometime it did'nt. Once I open the cover and moved the wire it fell right off the stator. So check your wires good and if the dc volts keeps going down and up or back to normal 13.4 don't blame the regulater.

Call hd shop today and the told me how to check the stater output it should be 30 to 40 ac volts at 2000 rpms and check to make sure the stater is not grounded then it is the regulator So now got to get a new regulator

I had a similar charging problem w/ my rk last summer. I checked every connection, cleaned them still coming up w/ a low battery code, (plus some other ones that no one knew why). Bike had to go in for some cosmetic work so I left the codes on and asked the dealer to check the charging system, which they did. Everything checked out good so they called the MoCo and were told to disconnect the ecm and clean the connectors. Haven't had a problem since. No one can figure out why, since the ecm is not in the charging circuit. You might try that.
