First of all I will start by saying I do not wear a helmet. My right, my choice. And I do believe that they can, have and may cause more injury then they prevent in some cases. Just like seat belts sometimes can and do cause more injury then if not worn. But lets be realistic. There is no doubt that your odds are WAY better while wearing a helmet or a seat bealt. That is a no brainer. If the law allows, then your choice, but lets not make a smoke screen. For every injury a helmet or seatbelt causes, it has saved many times that number in lifes. Be careful.
Many falls, flips and endos on dirt bikes in desert races. 2 big-time wrecks while riding "Class C" bikes on hard clay tracks. Both of the clay track wrecks were long slides down the track while wearing full leathers. I had no personal injuries. The leathers didn't fair as well. One endo on a dirt bike broke two ribs, my collar bone and cracked my shoulder blade. My head was protected by a Bell DOT rated motocross helmet. I have never gone down on pavement, but I always ride with full-face DOT rated helmet, full jacket with protective padding and gloves no matter how warm the temperature. During cooler weather, I wear heavy chaps. I always ride with boots that cover my ankle bones. Once, I bounced a Trials Bike off one boulder towards another boulder and my right foot slipped off the footpeg. It went under the bike's bash plate and onto the target rock. It broke the foot in three places. I have also broken two different fingers in dirt bike falls. I have been beat up pretty good in my motorcycle riding, but I will never quit! I will just try to be prepared for the next fall. ........... BC
I've had 6 accidents on a Kawasaki 1000 while riding on the street (none my fault) and cracked a 3/4 helmet nearly in half once, rung my bell good but no lasting effects (I think).
Thankfully, I've never had an accident on my Road King in the 12 years I've owned it which I attribute to the "Loud pipes save lives theory".
Dr Trousers: Be sure and replace your helmet if you haven't already. The crack will cause a loss of integrity to the helmets safety abilities.
Got rearended and i went over the bars onto my gravel driveway...the bike hung up on the kids bumper. Wasn't wearing a helmet or leathers...was just going up the street. A little gravel n roadrash..nothing serious. Always wear jeans, boots, and leather jacket now in all weather...but can't bring myself to wear a helmet..some people never learn i guess. Actually,i have been considering a half helmet for next season.
