Default have you "gone down"

Have you had an accident on your scoot and if so, has it changed the type of riding gear you wear now? Both Hubby and I have gone down on our bikes and although neither of us were "at fault" both our bikes were totalled . Since the accidents ( seperate times and places)we have both gone to full protective gear and full face helmets at all times- no matter what the weather. Hubby bounced along a freeway and landed again the center concrete median and was told by the CHP officers that only his full face saved his head, and thanks to chaps and jaket and kevlar gloves he had very little road rash anywhere. he did suffer broken ribs and messed up knee. I was t boned by an old lady driver who pinned me against another car. I only sufferd nerve damage in my right hand and arm, again the cops said my full gear saved my a--. I for sure say my crash bars saved my leg and foot that got pinned.

I hit a car that turned in front of me, did a endo over the hood leaving a big dent in it from my bell 3/4 magnum,It saved me from serious injury Im sure,I never ride without a DOT helmet even where helmets are not required and that was 37 years ago. Still wear gloves, but could and maybe should wear more protective gear.

Nope, but I try to wear the right gear in case I do. I'd love to ride around in the summer in a
tee shirt and shorts, but I won't take the chance of going down wearing this. To me the trade
off of the feeling of being in a tee shirt and shorts isn't worth the pain and skin grafting if I ever
went down. But I'm a believer in choice and to each their own. Same as helmets.

Just went down. Light accident from a van taking my lane. Always wear my shorty helment in traffic and it worked fine. My coat was the problem (inner lining burned off my skin while skidding - outer leather is fine). I still do not wear a coat all the time, and for trips to the store (2 mi) or out in the booneys I may not wear the helmet.

It is to each his (or her own). I've seen helmets cause just as many spine and neck injuries as they've saved head injuries. It's up to the person riding which chance he wants to take. One thing tho, I do always ride in levis and steel toed boots, throwback to the old days I guess.

I've gone down 3 times that were others faults, and 2 times that were mine. I was properly protected each time. Full face helmet, Leather jacket, and well just jeans, and motorcycle boots. Of course this was all before I got a Harley and decided that I was "cool." I rarely wear my full face, except on road trips now. I need to rethink this because it is a fact that a lot of bikers go down. I am not arrogant enough to think that since it has already happened to me that it won't again. I know better than most that when a car makes a quick swoop that it is sometimes faster than a human can react...Since I have gone down, I agree with the you haven;t or you're gonna saying, because until I did, I didn't understand how easily it could happen. But that is just me. No denial in my blood. Be careful out there folks...

there must be something in the water 'round yer parts, becuase i have actually NEVER seen or even heard credible reports of a helmet causing spine or neck injuries. now granted, i have only been riding daily for eighteen years or so, but despite being part of a pretty extensive motorcycle community (most wear fullface helmets but with a few half and 3/4 lids in the crowd) i have never heard of someone having their helmet cause injury. granted, my observations are not methodologically scientific, but ZERO injuries caused by helmets is kinda hard to miss.

maybe folks out your way crash differnetly or something.

im with you on the boots though. i have seen a number of bad foot injuries from motorcycle crashes, and have had boots save my feet one time as well. walked away from what would have been serious uglyness had i been wearing sneakers. strangely even though there is lots of fullface helmet usage around here, a high number of people (mostly newbs) ride in sneakers. all the serious folks i know wear boots though.

gatherings of motorcyclist generally look pretty gimpy, so knee armor is gaining popularity here among the hardcore riders. its beginning to have a slightly "madmax" appearance around here, minus the feathers. sounds weird, but still is more dignified than the weekend pirate look that so many seem to strive for.
