About 2 weeks ago I was hit. A car made a left hand turn in front of me when I was doing about 45mph. I went down hard. I have a broken pelvis and now have plates and screws. I also have a hair line fracture on my femur near my hip along with lots of road rash. I was in ICU for a day, hospital for a week and rehab for about 5 days. I will be in a wheelchair for 8 plus weeks while I heal then physical therapy to walk again. Recovery has been rocky to say the least. I think I was as lucky as serious accidents go.
At first I had no doubt I was going to ride again but after all this pain Im rethinking it. This is a very hard decision. Who out there has gone through the same thing with a serious motorcycle accident?
My 2010 SG with 8500 miles on it is a total loss. It broke a weld under the engine even. Dealer said they never seen that happen
Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you have a speedy recovery. But don't make any fast jugment right now about riding. Put everything into healing.
You're the one who has to decide. I totaled out a 3 week old 2007 Electra Glide Classic. Broke 5 ribs in 9 places and punctured a lung along with other injuries. I swore I would never ride again. Promised my family and friends. Then about 6 weeks into a 12 week recovery, I was able to get up an walk around the block some. Everytime I heard a bike go by, I felt a twinge of bike fever. A week after I got back to work I bought a 2003 Heritage with a hot engine in it. That was in 2006 and I'm still riding.
Glad you're still here to tell us about it. Seriously I would wait until after all the healing is over before I made a solid decision. You may have a different mindset at that time.
When I was young, my sister was involved in a bad, real bad accident. I was a passenger in that car. We were T-boned by a guy doing 75mph, totally caved in the rear passenger part of the car. Took me 6 weeks before I would get in a car with anyone. Let time go by, let wounds and memories heal, then make a decision.
I can't offer anything to your question as I have not been in your shoes.
I know at times some tease others about their safety gear and safety precautions but it is because of what happened to you that they take those precautions.
Just a gentle reminder to others not to pinch the nuts of people that ride with helmets, reflective vests, extra lights etc..
Again, I am glad you are here to tell us your story.
Before the war, the big one, my dad had an accident on his bike. He didn't go much into the details. Best I can remeber is that he got impaled by the handle bar end, and spent a week in the hospital.
After he got discharged from the hospital he didn't want to ride no more. Fear of going down again.
His friends on a pretense brought him up state NY and left him on the side of the road with his motorcycle.
With no other way to get home he got on his bike and rode it home. As the first few miles went by his fear went away and he felt riding to be as natural as it had ever been before.
As other's have said now is not the time to make a decision. And if you do decide to retire now keep in mind that many have been where you are now and have unretired years later.
Sorry to hear that cotn. Glad your still here to talk about it.
In '90 I was in a bad one. Shattered leg, messed up hip & back, messed up shoulder & a little brain damage for good measure. Slammed into the back of a stopped car goin about 40. Gravel. The entire intersection was covered in it.
At first I couldn't wait to get back on the bike but as time passed, (was on crutches for 3 years), I decided maybe I didn't want to ride so much anymore.
Jump forward 17 years. Daughter , (who used to ride w/ me, a lot), meets guy w/ a very nice '93 Heritage. Long story short she gets a sporty. Tells me to take it out. The same day SIL offers to let me ride the heritage. That was a day I will never forget. 2 weeks later I was the proud owner of an '06 heritage & couldn't be happier. I ride the crap outta this thing.
Hope your not too long healing & good luck!
