Default Code Scanners Ques

I tried the GIANT search button (as pointed out by Schumacher ) but didn't find any results. So here's my question:

I know that since 1996 there is compatibility in code scanners for different makes of cars. Does this compatibility apply to motorcycles too as far as hooking up, reading codes, etc? Can I get a code scanner normally used on a car and use it on my mc? Or do I need to get the one that MOCO sells?

you can pull the codes right off the odometer. turn ignition switch to off and run/stop switch to run. push odometer reset button in and hold. turn ignition switch to ignition and release odometer reset button. background lighting should illuminate and speedometer needle will sweep its full range and indicator lamps will illuminate the word diag should appear. push odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu PSSPT then you can scroll it to the P fault codes P is for the ECM/ICM which are the important ones....there are breakdowns of the codes here if you search or I can give you the P codes
