I have to say that I dont see how you could rub through the chrome. I am willing to bet thats a myth with todays polishes. It is not that abrassive.

I rubbed thru the chrome on my bikes primary cover when it was 3 days old. I got a black boot mark on the cover. I used some Mother's to rub it off. The chrome came off and you could see a copper spot about the size of a dime. My dealer replaced it with no questions asked.

Thats wierd I talked to my friend who shows is Semi and he uses an ORBITAL buffer on his chrome every week to get it to shine nice. Never had a problem. I bt his stacls get buffed almost a hundred times a year with an orbital buffer not to mention every other part of his semi that has chrome.
I'll bet you friend's semi has good chrome on it. HD's chromework is rather shoddy. Think about it.........You leave a HD sitting out in the rain for a few days and it rusts, right? Semi's aren't garaged nor cars from decades ago that were chrome laden. They didn't rust quickly. The chrome plating is put on as a decorative layer to protect the metal. That's it's job. It shouldn't be something that you have to worry about going out of your way to take care of.

I use WD -40 to remove tar and grime, then get the windex out. I did start using the S100 polishing soap lately and had good results, but worth it?

You can not make new chrome shine any brighter than it already is. I'm not talking about the old weathered chrome hood ornament on your pick up, I'm talking about the new chrome you have on your bike. Yes you can rub right thru the chrome to the copper plating underneath. I have done it using Simichrome (the pink stuff in the tube). It is mildly abrasive and over time you will see copper appearing if you continue to use it, trust me. I ruined my chrome handle bar controlls by rubbing right thru the chrome. This didnt happen over night but over a period of about 2 years with me stupidly thinking I could make chrome shine even brighter, you cant. Now I just use windex and then wax as a protector.......................BG

I agree with BigGeorge.

Well, except for that wax thing. Wax won't keep it from rusting. Do a little test. Take a piece of cheapo chromed steel, you know the kind lots of HD accessories are made of. Wax half and leave the other half alone. Lay it out in the weather. Maybe even mist a little salt water on it to speed things up. I'll bet you'll be surprised to find that both sides will rust equally.

If you wash your bike regularly, you don't need to do anything else to your chrome other than using WD-40 to get off road tar and maybe glass cleaner to get off water spots. Anything else is a waste of time and product. But if it makes you feel good...
