Default Luggage Rack

The design team at HD has designed a luggage rack on my 2009 RG that has the flip up back so it needs to be replaced in order to fit a touring bag on it. Good plan for them to spend another $200.00 bucks for a replacement that works correctly. Has anyone with the same problem ever tried to flatten the flip in a press without too much damage? Search does not offer any help.

I have the same luggage rack and hate that it curves up on the end.

I have one on my 09 street glide. Love it! The rack bag stays put, never a problem. Good luck on your decision! My .02.

A free mod........

I have a bag with hard plastic "shelves" in it so the flip in back made it so the bag did not fit. I solved the problem by cutting a scrap 2x4 to match the width of the rack and put it under the bag in the front of the rack (right behind the back rest). You can't see the 2x4 unless you are looking for it.

Extra bonus the scrap I used was pressure treated so it won't rot anytime soon.

I have that rack also. It's OK for small stuff, but sucks for larger bags. I hate the way it deforms my Kuryakyn Ultra Touring Bag.

Instead of trying to flatten it, I bought the HD tour pack detachable mount that works with the 4 point dock. I'm in the process of putting an 18'x12' 1/4" thick piece of aluminum diamond plate on the rack (you could make it any size you want). It will screw into the mounting holes on the rack. You can counter sink the tapered screw heads so it stays at the surface of the diamond plate instead of above and causing interference. Then, I'm going to drill some holes around the perimeter and mount eyelets for tiedown points. Should work great. Hope to have it done in a week or two. Might make them in two sizes.

I also was thinking of maybe making it slightly bigger so that my largest bag would fit with a small gap to the passenger backrest so I could put jackets in the gap for the those warm/cool or day/night rides. Then I'd still have total access to the bag without having to un-net the jackets from the touring bag.
