Glad to hear you weren't injured! I hope you get your bike repaired quickly!

They are putting roundabouts in all over the place around SE Wisconsin. Seems every small town decided they needed to put one in. They are even putting them on on-ramps and off-ramps to the expressway. Unfortunately no one here seems to know how to negotiate them. They either just dart out in front of everyone or they sit there until the entire circle is clear before they go.
You'd think some state DOTs would make some PSAs or something explaining them, since so many don't understand them.
Just a 15 second spot explaining that the same rules of the road still apply might do some good to assure drivers who are still freaked out by their newness.
As other had mentioned in NJ is infested with circles. The state is slowly working to eliminate them because they no longer help the traffic flow, them impede it. People say they go into them, make no eye contact with anyone, and just go! And based on my experiences they speak the truth.
See my signature for my riding philosophy. It comes in handy from time to time.
I live about 15 minutes from Hell, Mi ... at the intersection of Lee Road and US 23 are three ( count 'em 3 ) roundabouts that create a maze that will get you in trouble real quick if you're not careful. This was the first "triple" roundabout in the country and according to the "Powers That Be" they would reduce the number of "injury" accidents significantly. I don't know who's counting injuries but the number of accidents is way up. The intersection provides access to a new mall ( like we really needed one ) that has be refered to as the "Suicide Mall" because you're putting yourself in real jeopardy going over there. Here's a link to an overhead view of the mess. http://wikimapia.org/#lat=42.5056418...4&z=16&l=0&m=b
You should see it at 5:00 pm on a week night.
The problem isn't the roundabout - it's really a simple construct.
The real problem is largely due to the fact that many people simply don't know how to operate a motor vehicle these days. A driver's license is just something that one buys, there is no skill necessary to get one. As a result, the roadways are filled with folks totally deficient in the skills and knowledge to operate their vehicle... which many times is much larger than they can handle.
If you can grasp the concept of a 4-way stop sign, you can handle a roundabout. But, sadly, many folks cannot.
Good luck to you and your bike, hope both of you are well soon. I hate the damn roundabout things. Suzy Creamcheese comes flying through, talking to her BFF on the cell phone and what lillte brain she has is absorbed in the conversation, then wham.....somebody gets hurt. When will they out law texting while driving or cell talking while driving ? and these damn roundabouts too.
I was recently in Carmel, IN and one of the residents said the same thing. Seems some study showed that roundabouts are safer than 4 way stop sign controlled intersections. Maybe...but I'm not convinced just yet.

This is probably the correct take on it, are the road of USA really that full of no hopers? I mean I read the stories of riders not being able to ride through a bend and all that but roundabouts, jeez its not hard is it? Is it?
We have hundreds of thousands of roundabouts in the UK and its a better, more free flowing system which doesn't take much working out. Compare that to having to stop at lights I know which one I'll choose
