After reading AustinDaves thread on security I thought of this -
A buddy was hanging out at a popular spot called The Black Watch. Normally the area has been known to be safe but on a Friday night he pulled up, threw his helmet in the helmet ring and locked it. End of the night he walks out and helmet is gone and a 3 inch piece of strap is hanging from lock.
If this happened to you and you live in a State requiring helmets, What do you do?
1. Say screw it and ride off.
2. Ask for a ride to grab another helmet.
3. Dial 911 and tell them what happened and that you are riding helmetless.
4. None of the above
This is what he did. He fired it up and took off down the road. I don't know what I'd do but I think it depends on how far away from where I needed to go and what time of day or night. I think I'd call the PD during daylight hours...but then they might "suggest" I find another way home or another way to get me and the bike home.
I know for a fact that in some states that require a DOT helmet for the rider, if you get pulled over riding without one, they will ticket you and impound your bike. The thought behind it is they cannot let you drive off without a helmet as you will be repeating the offense. Like pulling over a drunk driver, ticketing them, then letting them continue to drive themselves home.
Chances are, the guy that stole his helmet came out a few minutes earlier to find his helmet missing, didn't want to ride home without one, and "borrowed" your buddies.
