I am going to say no such animal ever existed. Parts have been sourced from overseas for longer than most people realize. I bet the 1903 model had European sparkplugs and bearings...ever seen a sparkplug that didn't have metric threads?

Yep, it was AMF's fault. They stripped the MoCo of cash which killed R&D funding. Their continued need to feed their bloated corporate infrastructure required them to keep increasing the HD production and sales goals, at reduced costs, causing a drop in quality in order to meet them. So yes, I blame AMF
