I would call that being a poser. Like buying pre-distressed jeans. FAKE. That's pretty embarrassing, if it is true.
A POSER is pretending to be something you're not. This is not the case with the aforementioned story. Returning back to your initial source of tech is not pretending, it is just a choice. After all, it is their tech in the first place.
Try this method which is almost as old as I am. First start of the day. Put bike in neutral AND hold the clutch in. Keep holding the clutch in and start the bike and let it run for 30 seconds to a minute. Then engage first. It should be totally silent.
Also, if you have a slope in your drive way with the clutch still in let it coast down the driveway and shift into gear at the bottom.
My record is 7 silent shifts in a row. Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands.
While the bike is setting the clutch presses the oil out from between the discs. By holding the clutch in while in neutral and idling some will get back in for cushion. This does not work hot for some reason.
HD = Heavy Duty. They make motorcycles that don't have heavy clunk noises. They are called Honda's. They are easy to recognize as they are garnered in plastic parts a blazon orange riders.
I got all excited by this topic until I saw that the subject said "Clack" and not "Clang".
My Dyna makes a loud clang noise when i go over potholes. I cant tell if my pegs are slamming against the heat shields on my pipes or if its some other parts making contact.
I cant hear very well but I can certainly feel the clang; damned if I know where its coming from.
It doesn't bother me - I actually like the very positive and mechanical nature of the shift. But compared to other manufacturers, Harley's gearshift is loud.
Just wondering why, is all. I remember the Suzuki's I learned on had a very quiet shift. You only knew you'd changed gear because the lever stopped moving. Perhaps that was because the lever was directly connected to the outside of the gearbox, rather than via a fairly long linkage.
Have you ever shifted an I-4 into 1st with the RPM at say, 3,000-RPM?

That makes a lot of sense and sounds like it would work. Only problem is, I simply cannot wait that long to get in gear and rolling. It's a sickness. Don't know how anybody can.
Oh, and ... "That first shift of the day sounds like a train wreck."
Yeah ... THAT's what it sounds like!
