Really? So do they just pull you over at random to shove a three or five-gas analyzer in your tail pipe and slap a ticket on your forehead if you're giving mother nature cancer? Do they not have inspection and emissions tests there for these purposes?
depending on the type of check or what equip they are carrying, yes they can pull you over at random. They also setup checkpoints, its these that usually have the gas analyzers. A random pull over by an LEO in his wagon is usually just a db check and a scan for other illegal mods. If they spy non stock pipes and AC it is instantly assumed that your emissions will be out of order as well and your bike gets towed (which you have to pay for) to the nearest checking station.
Its not always as bad as it sounds, some LEOs are reasonable and give you a break, but it does happen more often than i've seen anywhere else.
we do have 2 yearly mandatory emisons checks, but people being people, your bike could have any setup between the mandatory checks, hence the random checks.
So I keep seeing posts where people are talking about how newer EPA regulations are causing HD bikes to run leaner, which is resulting to bad things for their bikes, such as making them run hotter, and ultimately may force HD to move to liquid cooled engines.
Are these regs such a bad thing for the bike performance? If so, why?
Or is someone better-off owning an older bike to get around the EPA regs?
You could move to Ohio. I have had street legal bikes titled here since 1993 and I have never had one inspected to get plates. There is no yearly inspection here. Just pay your tax....... (I MEAN LISCENCE PLATE FEE) and ride away
For those of you who stated that the EPA has hurt businesses or put them out of business that is not its mission. Its mission is to protect human health and the environment. The bad acts of some businesses affect those businesses which are doing the right thing. Self-policing does not work, enforcement does. As far as "bad science" EPA develops proposed regulations and publishes them for industry, business and us to comment on. If you are not offering better "science" you really cannot complain. Just my two cents.

The EPA's regulations have done a great job of cleaning up our air over the last 25 years, in spite of there being twice as many vehicles. But it seems like diminishing returns, it's now getting much more difficult to achieve even a slight further improvement in vehicle emissions. On the other hand there's the booming, practically unregulated natural gas industry that's now emitting a *tremendous* amount of air pollution. For instance take the state of Colorado, there's now more pollution being put in the air from Colorado's natural gas wells and compressor stations than all vehicles in Colorado combined!
Maybe it's time for the EPA to re-focus their effort?
You are absolutely correct Ridewva. EPA has nationwide an oil and gas initiative. Give EPA sometime to build some momentum. I do not have children but we cannot leave them with a large national debt and a contaminated environment.
A lot of industry has left this country and moved to other countries taking good jobs with it over regulations that pushed profits to an unacceptable level for companies. I have seen this in my industry. Usable resources are not being used and jobs are not being created in this country over these same overzealous application of unattainable EPA standards. I watched Texas approach rolling blackouts during a unprecedented heat wave that could have cost lives because of mandates making older power plants unacceptable to bring on line. There also is not enough profit to justify building bigger newer plants to handle just such an increase in demand only once or twice every decade. You tree huggers have lost sight of the fact that these mandates hurt people. They cost money and sometimes the cost is disproportional to the benefit. Nobody wants dirty air or dirty water but face it ---even bears **** in the woods.

One of these photos is from a country with an EPA.
Another is from a country with NO EPA or agency like it.
You decide where you want to live, and if there NO alternative way to make a living that doesn't require shitting on our environment.
Boilermakers for Obama! My union has killed the golden goose. We are the largest group of unionized workers out of work permantly. Ha Ha I just hope someone puts and end to the fat cats in the union as well.
