I understand that the code reader from HD gives you the code for a problem when hooked up to the bike but how do i know what the code means? Does the instructions that come with the reader explain what each code is or do I need something else to tell me what each code means?
This is the device I am talking about for clarification
Thanks for your help! I am definitely not a wrencher but I purchased the service manual and started going through it and I want to start doing most of things by myself. The manual really seems to explain things very well so I guess when I end up having trouble I will also come here for some answers
The reader probably comes with a list of codes. The service manual (maybe its the electronic manual) has a list of them.
I can get the codes without the reader and you probably can too. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/elect...tic-codes.html
EDIT: I checked and the Electrical Diagnostic Manual has the codes for my '08.
I bought the Harley Code Reader. I know I can get the codes from the odometer but it's so much easier to just plug the reader in and read the codes right on the screen. Easy to reset the codes too.
It does not come with a list of what the codes mean, you still need a service manual for that.
It's worth it to me, you may feel differently, your call.
I can't tell you much more since I've yet to have a code show up. My bike just runs too good.

I am not saying the codes aren't in the sevice manual but I have not seen them there. Guess I will have to look harder
Well I'm glad you posted that, thanks I think I need to get one. I was getting codes B1006 and B1007 and P563, After about an hour and a half at the Harley Shop, I was told it was a bad speedo on my 2011 superglide custom. Glad its covered under warranty! But I'm still going to buy a master code reader. thanks.
The codes are in the Electrical Diagnostics manual, not the regular service manual.
Yes I just found that out at the dealer earlier today. Also want to thank the poster that gave me the on how to check. It works great. And thankfully I had no codes come up. I must be hearing things, was thinking I was having some kind of fuel pump issue or something along those line because I am hearing a hissing sound after I start it.
Oh well if something is wrong maybe now I will be able to figure it out instead of paying the dealer.

Man I hate typing on the crackberry misspell everything, periods where they shouldn't and so on
