BRAVO BRENN!! THATS EXACTLY IT. HOWEVEr there is a floor of wages thru which everone would fall competeing with chinese peasants that would b equally bad for our economy. If the majoirty of population has no disposable income, commerce would sag dramaticaaly. Bottom line is unions got waaaay out of control probably in the 80s but there is a place for them.
Unions or not manufacturing was going overseas. They can simply pay them 1/10th of what they would have to pay any US worker, union or not. People always use a ton of hyperbole when talking about what union workers make anyway.
To the OP you may not be able to get Harley Made in the USA stuff anymore, but the good news is their stuff is largely crap and you shouldn't buy it anyway. Much better stuff like fox creek, schott, langlitz but it's pricey, Aero (not made in US but Scottish), and few other companies out there, the added bonus of not looking like a fool with all your spanking new Harley gear. Put your money their way, HD jackets are so overpriced the USA made stuff isn't much more.
Had a 1986 VMAX...loved that bike...Went looking at the new 2011 VMAX...still love it....a lot.....
Just could not get myself to buy import again, so, off to the local HD Dealer i went.
Prices are substantially higher, but ended up with a HD.
The ONLY reason i have a HD is because it's American made.
Looking at the Leather's at the dealership left me disappointed at HD.
How can they do this......selling made in CHina gear......and price it as if it was Union made in America.....
Nothing about HD bikes/parts/gear, is cheap....far from it.
SO, i still don't have a new jacket. I will get a American made one in November when i go the OH for a few days.
I'll have Fox Creek ship me one to the address i will be visiting at.
(same price as the Harley Jacket, HD is selling).
Screw HD's Chinese made crap.
I drive/ride all American made vehicles -
cars - Nissan & Toyota
bike - Harley...
I try to drive stuff where the MONEY goes to a company based in the U.S.A., not China or Japan.

I have a Harley leather jacket that's quality is at least as good or better than your Fox Creek or whatever US or Scottish brand you have. Also, I don't give a **** if you think I look like a fool wearing it (even though it's not "spanking new").

You think a comparable Harley is "substantially higher" than a new Vmax? A new Vmax is $20,000.

Look closer, many of the parts are made in Japan, Mexico, China, Italy, etc, etc............might even be some Canadian parts on there. Why not buy a Canadian made jacket, there are still a few around, I wish Treen was still around because I'd be wearing one.
As for where stuff is made, I routinely haul "Canadian made" garments across the border. Do you all think that Canadian made would be preferable to China? Well duh - usually this is small runs of goods because it is in fact cheaper to make stuff here unless you need a lot of it. The funny thing is that every time I pick up at one of these garment manufacturers in Canada the place is filled to the brim with (typically) Asian workers - is there any difference?

No, i don't think it is!
Comparable Harley? No such thing.
But, new 2011 Vmax was given a price of 16599.
My 2012 Heritage was 20500.
Both Canadian prices before tax
In the end, it's all good and i have a CANADIAN or AMERICAN product, which now is extremely important to me.

Unforutnately, once the unions get out of control, prices go up, everybody else needs more money too, then more prices go up - inflation, I think they call it. It's hard or impossible to fix the problem, once you have it.
I'm done with HD clothing. The Tees all bust out under the arm (have about 30 of them), jacket liners fall apart in about a 1 1/2 yrs. It's crap. If you only put it on 3 or 4 times a yr it works great. To use it every day it's crap. It's not usin gear at all.
